Tech Giants Censoring Christian and Conservative Speech Online -NRB

Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple, and other technology giants seem to be censoring Christian and conservative speech online, according to a media group which has launched an initiative to document such incidents.

On Dec. 7, the National Religious Broadcasters launched the Internet Freedom Watch initiative to record cases of Christian and conservative speech censorship online by technology companies. Twitter’s removal of Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s (R-Tenn.) ad, Facebook doing the same with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s pro-Chick-fil-A post, and other similar cases were recorded on the website InternetFreedomWatch.org, World Net Daily detailed.

NRB said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and a former commissioner for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have endorsed the Internet Freedom Watch initiative. There are currently more than 30 recorded instances of Christian censorship posted on the website.

FCC chairman Ajit Pai recently accused technology companies of fighting for a free and open Internet while blocking “content they don’t like.” NRB president and CEO Jerry A. Johnson said their group now wants to deal with entities that “desire to expunge opposing viewpoints from the marketplace of ideas by recklessly using nebulous terms like ‘hate speech.'”

In light of the situation, the NRB sent a letter to the technology giants that invited them to a dialogue to come up with a solution to the threats to religious liberty. The group is also calling on Congress to hold hearings regarding the issue.

In late October, the Family Research Council reported pro-lifers’ suspicion that YouTube was discriminating against conservative views. PragerU, which has been producing short videos presenting conservative ideas, also came to the same conclusion after the video-sharing site blocked dozens of its posts.

Some of the blocked videos include those tackling abortion, Islam, Biblical teachings, and Christian persecution. Because of what happened, PragerU decided to sue YouTube and its parent company Google for allegedly trying to censor their conservative views online.
