Scripture makes clear that men are called to a variety of ministries and professions. Those called are equipped with natural and spiritual gifts to fulfill their offices. While the standard for choosing civil leaders is Exodus 18:21, God has used pagan leaders throughout history. Men like Abimelech (Gen 20:1-18) Cyrus (2 Chr 36:22-23), Ahasuerus (Est 8:12-13), and Cornelius (Acts 10:1-31) have all been used by God to benefit His people. He calls public servants “ministers.” Judges wear robes, even today, a practice that points back to Romans 13, where civil governors are called ministers of God. Our choices at the top of the ticket have lots of “baggage.” Thus we must look beyond the personalities and examine party and candidate platforms. If God’s people do not vote this year, and vote aright, there will be huge consequences for our country.
