Have you noticed how stores go from Orange and Black to Red and Green? More and more stores are opening on Thanksgiving Day, which means many intrepid shoppers will be standing in line for a “holiday deal” instead of sitting at the table with their families and giving thanks to God. Is it just me or has Thanksgiving just become a “speed bump” between Halloween and Christmas? Yet Thanksgiving is the only uniquely American holiday and it has such strong Biblical and historical roots.
While other explorers and settlers celebrated Thanksgiving earlier on this continent, we most closely identify Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were committed Christians from a single church in Scrooby, England who fled to Holland to find religious freedom before ultimately relocating to America. Their story, with all the instances of God’s Providence, bears repeating again and again as we consider God’s goodness and provision in our own lives this Thanksgiving.
